In our Los Angeles showroom, ceramic sculptures by Maria Moyer organically engage with bulthaup design and materiality. There are 23 hand-built-ceramic pieces in this exhibition, created 2018 to 2020. All the works are stoneware with a surface treatment called terra sigillata used in ancient Rome; glazes are added as a structural element.

Artist Statement

As a sculptor, I explore nature’s systems: the forms, the in-between spaces and the patterns and principles that repeat through layers of physical existence.

I don’t seek to represent or describe nature, but my material language is certainly informed by it. Even as a philosophical materialist, my studio practice is not unlike conventional religious attempts to make sense of things. Along the way, I try to make work that is an experience—for looking, touching and for thinking.

I work primarily with clay, including unfired-paper clay. Clay is especially adept at recording touch, and even better at generating unpredictable results when minerals, heat and human intervention are combined. In this way, my work is an artifact in an explorative act of making. I use glaze sparingly, as I prefer not to conceal evidence of my presence, and glazes can cover imperfections and random events that occur in the kiln.

Paella Feast

January 22, 2020

In celebration of this new year and start of a new decade, bulthaup Los Angeles and Compass agent Lynda Kahn hosted a magnificent paella feast with renowned chef Javier Plascencia. Javier set up his paella pan just outside the showroom, cooking al fresco while guests sipped on Cava Sparkling Brut and savored his, fresh from the Sea of Cortez, scallop tostadas. The theme for the evening; for the decade and beyond: Let’s take care of each other. Everyone was invited to serve their neighbor from the family style paella pans set on each of the tables.

benefit! our special fundraiser for the nutrition-focused nonprofit Common Threads, that we have held with great success in our Chicago and Miami showrooms, was tremendous in Los Angeles! Once again, the creative community reinterpreted our bulthaup tray creating signature pieces for silent auction, raising funds for Common Threads whose mission foregrounds health and home-cooking for children and families. Chef Monti, who teaches a Common Threads program, shared her personal story of food scarcity and spoke animatedly and passionately about her work with the organization.Thank you for the collaboration of K2 Restaurants and Wine by Winc for making this a beautiful and very memorable evening for all! Showroom Reopening Party June 28, 2018

A warm and lively energy permeated our newly remodeled showroom as guests enjoyed bites by Whiskey Tango Catering and the worldly tunes of DJ Orange also known as architect Mark Mack. There were as well moments of thoughtful reflection and creativity at our activation table where we invited all to sketch and explore a little our design process and materials. A beautiful start to our new showroom, our new story!

A Valentine Would Be Divine

February 13, 2018

It was a LOVEfest at bulthaup Los Angeles with Valentines lovingly made to Bruce Goff, Alvar Aalto, Ray Eames, Luis Barragan, and more! Those who did not have a chance to create a Valentine to their favorite artist or designer in advance did so on site with traditional materials that harkened back to the days of our youth…construction paper, doilies, glitter…remember? And if not inspired to create, there was inspiration to nibble, on Piadini with prosciutto, crab cakes, crispy artichoke, ahi tuna with avocado, and, of course, gourmet chocolate confetti!

A Bite for Peace Dinner and Gathering of Community

A Bite for Peace Dinner and Gathering of Community

July 23, 2017

Chef Natalia Pereira has projects she wants to see realized in Africa: even as simple as providing goats to a village. Her A Bite for Peace gatherings are about people coming together around a table to share stories, promote peace and community, and to raise some funds to make her projects happen. bulthaup Los Angeles was pleased to be host of this most recent dinner experience. The menu reflected flavors and ingredients of Kenya, served family style, culminating in an incredible coconut lamb stew. There was much laughter at the table and in the kitchen as everyone enjoyed good food and each other.
